2010 T-Ten North American Championship
Day 2 Report by Nick Turney
Sailing with Jim Ward on Wine Squall
Day 2 of NAC’s are in the books. Yet another great day of sailing. We had about an hour postponement on the water this morning while we waited for the breeze to fill in and stabilize. Around 12 noon we had a building north westerly of 8-12. Today the breeze was a little shiftier which made things very interesting at the top of the course. Our Team, Wine Squall, ended up with a 4th and we where very happy with that. Ted Pinkerton’s team on Perfect squeaked out the bullet a narrow margin. Race 2 we saw more breeze, around 12-15 with some puffs in the low twenties. Team Gotcha skippered by Dave Disbrow lead around the whole race to take the win. They sailed a fantastic race. The third race was very shifty in a 15-18 knot breeze. Our team on the mighty Wine Squall rounded the top mark in 4th and managed to grab the bullet by passing boats on the final leg leading into the finish. The top 4 boats had a very close race going on.
Sailing the boat in flat water and puffy shifty conditions was very challenging today. We, Wine Squall, were a little more aggressive with the rig tune than last race going up on the uppers a few turns. We played the backstay constantly and again non stop movement of the traveler. At times we felt a little bound up or stalled so we would ease the jib out an inch or 2 to get things freed up again and gain the boat speed needed to point. In the flat water you could really trim the main hard and gain the height, using the traveler and backstay to keep the boat balanced. If we needed even more height, like off the starting line or on the layline, we would completely let the backstay off and carve the boat to weather. For the most part though, we really focused on sailing the boat as flat as possible.
Tomorrow's forecast looks a little lighter with cooler temps. The Bayview race committee is doing a fantastic job of getting races in, I am sure tomorrow will be another great day!
Tomorrow will be my last update as I have to fly to new Jersey for the lighting North Americans.
Thanks,
Nick
